Jewelry in Mexico

Beto Cortes

Jewelry is part of our daily life, these shiny objects that we use every day, with simple, complex, and sometimes too eccentric designs are most of our accessories commonly used by men, women, girls and even babies; with components that include gold, silver, and some alloys with copper, tin, copper and some other minerals, accompanied by precious stones and crystals.

Jewelry in Mexico has its origin thanks to the interaction of indigenous cultures, where by the archaeological evidence found in tombs and illustrations, there are representations of the Toltec, Mixtec, Zapotec, Mayan and Aztec civilizations using finely carved jade jewelry, pendants of gold, quartz earmuffs, bracelets, ear plugs and pieces with animal motifs, which were used in religious representations and themes related to death.

It should also be noted that before the Spanish invasion, gold was abundant in Mexico and South America, which attracted many Spanish explorers to the region. As a result of the Spanish Colonization, Spanish artisans taught the natives to work with gold and silver throughout the 16th century. From that moment on, a more complex mixture of metals and more elaborate designs began to emerge and even through time, they continue to evolve.

One of the movements that revolutionized jewelry in Mexico was the arrival of William Spratling to Mexico in 1927, an architect and professor of American origin, who took on the task of using the large silver deposits in the area, for the benefit of the town of Taxco, making it a world-renowned Silver Jewelry destination in the country, where today you can find hundreds of industrial workers and more than 1000 establishments dedicated to the sale of silver jewels.[1]

Today, Mexico represents almost 20% of world silver production, making it the world's leading producer. To this day, more than 10 billion ounces of silver have been produced per year, with an average of 100 million per year.

Gold in Mexico has decreased in recent years, however, the region remains very attractive as an investment opportunity for private initiative. This is due to the fact that experts have estimated that approximately 70% of the Mexican territory contains great geological potential for mining; making Mexico the first foreign destination for direct investment (FDI) in Latin America and the fourth worldwide.[2]

The evolution of gold jewelry in Mexico has been gradual, it has matured over the years and with the spark of globalization, international markets have allowed the exchange of jewelry designs from all over the World, making the offer for the consumer more diverse and sophisticated, leading manufacturers and designers to break paradigms seeking trends that adapt to global needs and in return, produce highly complex pieces.

There is a wide variety of jewelry pieces, from rings, rings, bracelets, bracelets, necklaces, chains, torques, pendants, medallions, earrings, studs, among many others.
